Problem
A CRISIS WE CANNOT IGNORE
Uganda’s streets are home to an estimated 10,000 children an invisible population trapped in cycles of violence, neglect, and poverty. Many fled abuse or extreme hardship, only to face further trauma: hunger, sexual exploitation, addiction, and brutal treatment by authorities. They are seen as criminals rather than children in need. Night after night, they sleep in fear beaten, robbed, or raped with no protection and nowhere to turn. Their cries often go unheard. We’re here to change that.
How It All Started
ONE WOMAN’S COURAGE TURNED HEARTBREAK INTO HOPE
In 2013, Joanna Eliasson a Swedish interior designer and trained social worker arrived in Uganda for what was meant to be a one-year volunteer trip. What began as a temporary calling turned into a life-long mission. After uncovering severe abuse at an orphanage, she fought for justice, rescued dozens of children, and realized her purpose was deeper. By 2014, she founded STEPS Foundation to restore dignity, hope, and home to Uganda’s forgotten street children.
EVERY CHILD DESERVES A CHANCE TO COME HOME
STEPS rescues, rehabilitates, and reunites street children in Uganda giving them safety, healing, education, and a chance to belong again. Rooted in Christian compassion, we walk with each child from the streets into a loving family and a hopeful future. No child should grow up alone, and at STEPS, no child ever does.
